CHRONIC MYELOID LEUKEMIA TREATMENT

What is chronic myeloid leukemia: Chronic myeloid leukemia also known as chronic myelogenous leukemia is white blood cell cancer. Chronic myeloid leukemia is a type of leukemia that results in unregulated growth of myeloid cell in the bone marrow and deposition of those defected cells in the blood.

Chronic myeloid leukemia is the change in myeloid cells that result in the growth of different kinds of blood cells. The change in the myeloid cell increases the formation of an abnormal gene called BCR-ABL, this gene turns the normal cell into a chronic myeloid leukemia cell. The leukemia cell further grows and settles into different body parts via blood.

Chronic myeloid leukemia at the initial stage is generally slow-growing leukemia. This slow-growing leukemia can be turned into fast-growing acute leukemia that is difficult to treat. Chronic myeloid leukemia basically occurs in adults but can really occur in children.

Chronic myeloid leukemia treatment: Chronic myeloid leukemia treatment includes chemotherapy, targeted drug, biological therapy, and stem cell transplantation.

●    Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation: In the past when tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) drugs were not available for the treatment of chronic myeloid transplantation then stem cell transplantation was used but recently stem cell transplantation is generally avoided and TKI is preferred.

●    Chemotherapy: Chemotherapy is one of the best methods for the treatment of chronic myeloid leukemia. In chemotherapy, effective drugs should be taken orally or injected intravenously. In chronic myeloid leukemia, some chemotherapy drugs such as imatinib work much better than other drugs. Few chemo drugs such as hydroxyurea are taken orally and this drug helps to lower the count of white blood cells and shrink the enlarged spleen.

●    Omacetaxine is the chemo drug that helps a patient suffering from chronic myeloid leukemia from further mutation. Some of the Other chemo Drugs are busulfan, cyclophosphamide, vincristine, cytarabine.

●    Veenat 400 mg is a kind of most promising medication that can be used in treating patients with chronic myeloid leukemia. The elaboration is given as follows:

Veenat 400 mg: Imatinib is a chemo drug used in the treatment of chronic myeloid leukemia. This medication is also effective in the case of treatment of lymphoblastic leukemia, gastrointestinal stromal tumor, and myeloproliferative diseases. This medication works by stopping or slowing down the growth of cancer cells in the body.
Imatinib mesylate tablet is taken daily with or without food. Never crush, chew or break the existing tablet. Swallow the tablet as a whole. The dosage of the imatinib mesylate tablet depends upon response to the treatment, medical condition, and combined result with other medications.

Imatinib mesylate tablets come in two different concentrations that are 100 mg and 400 mg. The most recommended dose of imatinib mesylate tablet is 400mg given to the adult patient suffering from chronic myeloid leukemia.

Veenat 400 mg Uses: Veenat 400 mg is the medication used in the treatment and prevention of growth of several types of cancer such as bone marrow cancer, intestinal cancer, stomach cancer, and skin cancer. The amount of veenat 400mg remains in the body depending upon its usage.

How long imatinib mesylate tablets are taken: About 70% of people taking imatinib mesylate in chronic myeloid leukemia treatment get a positive response within one year of imatinib uptake. The cytogenetic response of imatinib is much higher than other tyrosine kinase inhibitors. After a year of imatinib mesylate intake, the majority of people have complete molecular responses whereas few patients require continuous imatinib dosage.

Imatinib mesylate side effect: Some of the common side effects of imatinib mesylate are mentioned below:
●    Vomiting
●    Nausea
●    Diarrhea
●    Headache
●    Muscle ache
●    Blurred vision
●    Dizziness
●    Stomach ache
●    Constipation
●    Muscle ache
●    Rashes
●    Sinus pain
●    Sleepiness

Some of the serious adverse reaction of imatinib mesylate which when appear a patient should immediately consult to doctor are listed below:
●    Swelling
●    Weakness and shortness of breath
●    Gastrointestinal bleeding
●    Jaundice
●    Severe blister all over the skin
●    Easy bleeding
●    Severe headache
●    Extreme tiredness
●    Arrhythmic heartbeat
●    Sudden weight gain
●    Severe flu-like symptoms
●    Unexplained vomiting

FAQ

How long can you live with Chronic Myeloid Leukemia?
If you have CML your overall prognosis will depend on a number of factors, such as; how good you are physically, appropriate nature of the disease at diagnosis and, most necessarily, how good your disease responds to the treatment.
Your healthcare provider is the precise person to tell you about an accurate prognosis related to your leukaemia as he/she has all of the important information in order to make this assessment. The five-year survival rate is 90%

Is chronic myeloid leukemia curable?
CML is not a conventionally curable disease. However, a TKI class of drugs has transformed the treatment of Chronic Myeloid Leukemia in order to achieve the operational cure. A number of patients will have a normal or general life span with the quality of life.

Without treatment, CML is fatal. The transplant of stem cells remains a cure for the illness in a small number of patients. However, with the help of TKIs a good success rate has been reported. Apart from this, bone marrow or stem cell or bone marrow transplant in order to treat Chronic Myeloid Leukemia are quite rare.

What are the stages of Chronic Myeloid Leukemia?
Chronic Myeloid Leukemia is recognised as having 3 distinct phases or stages: chronic, accelerated and blast phase.

Difference between CML and CLL?
Chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML), basically is a cancer of the WBC (white blood cells). It is mainly a form of leukemia, which is characterized by the increased as well as unregulated growth of the myeloid cells in the bone marrow and the accumulation of these myeloid cells in the blood.

ALL, is the cancer of a lymphoid line of the blood cells, which is mainly characterized by the development of huge numbers of immature lymphocytes.

What are Imatinib Mesylate Tablets?
This is the oldest TKI therapy drug which is highly effective oral drug therapy, bring about a stable remission in most people.

Imatinib has been the standard initial therapy (first-line treatment) for chronic phase CML since 2001.

Studies have shown that this drug keeps the chronic phase of CML under control for at least 10 years, which is the longest publicized observation period since its approval (in 2001).

The medication is generally well tolerated by the majority of the both younger as well as older patients, although several people experience some adverse effects.
